Zombie Vs. Unicorns (edited by Justin Larbalestier and Holly Black)

This book was awesome. I usually don't like short stories because as so as you get to know the characters its over or you don't really know the characters, but this book has some great authors and I love the arguments before each story. It goes back and forth with a unicorn story first than zombie and it ends with a zombie story. There are six stories for each side.  The 1st story, The Highest Justice by Garth Nix, I enjoyed it combined both Unicorns and zombies, so that was cool. Love will Tear Us Apart by Alaya Dawn Johnson was okay but focused too much on the romance than zombies for me. I really enjoyed the unicorn, Purity Test by Naomi Novik. I have read Carrie Ryan's novel and the short story Bougainvillea is set in the same world and it was okay, I didn't love The Forest of Hands and Teeth as much as a lot of others did but I still enjoy her writing. A Thousand Flowers by Margo Lanagan was also just okay for me. It wasn't really exciting for me and was confusing. The children of the Revolution by Marren Johnson  was a good zombie one. I loved Rampant by Diana Peterfreund and really enjoyed her short story The Care and Feeding of you Baby Killer Unicorn. Inoculata by Scot Westerfeld was a zombie one I really enjoyed. I also enjoyed Princess Prettypants by Meg Cabot.  As much as I enjoy the killer unicorns I also enjoyed the rainbow, happy, kiddie version too. I love Cassandra Clare and her version of zombie in Cold Hands. The Third Virgin was a weird story but I liked it. It was different. The final story Prom Night by Libba Bray was also pretty good.

Overall 5 stars, brillant anthology

Torment by Lauren Kate

Spolier warning for Fallen

I really enjoyed Fallen even though it was slow in the middle and picked up right at the end. I was hoping Torment would be full of action and fast paced through out the book because the first book was a set up for the series. I heard this from other reviewers before I read it but she is taken to another boarding school and it is slow paced like Fallen but still really good. I liked the new characters and that Penn was remembered.  Sometimes after characters die they are forgotten in the next book and not really mentioned.  The writing was awesome like in Fallen.

Beautiful Darkness

Sequel to Beautiful Creatures

Amazing book!  I really enjoyed the new characters although Lena kinda annoyed me in this one. It was sorta slow paced at the beginning like the first one but still really good and it the action pick up in the last half and I couldn't put it down. Ridily is awesome and really grew as a character.  The writing was just as good as before and it's amazing how well they can write together.   The readers keep learning new things about Gatlin and the casters. I love this series and can't wait for the next one

Alchemist Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel Series Michael Scott

This is a pretty good series, although it is slow at times.  I love how he puts in characters that are based on real people in history. The characters are well written. The siblings relationship is realistic.
The written is good but a different style from what I'm used too, which can drag a little.  The author is Irish and I read plenty of international authors, so it's not that but his own writing style. The way is set up with all the characters being based on real people is a unique idea and I haven't read anything like it before.
The plot is good. It has the same basic good vs evil magic theme to it.

Favorite Covers

I don't know if this is a meme or someone already does this , if so , let me know so I can give credit :)

I'm going to post some of my favorite cover once a week and why I love them

Mortal Instruments and Clockwork Angel

I adore these covers. I love the way they match with the city skyline at the bottom and characters pictures. I like that its just the chest and part of the face of the people so the model's face doesn't mess with the image in my head.  Clockwork Angel is similar enough but different since it the prequel series.  They're also shiny and look great on the bookshelf.

I am Number Four Pittacus Lore

Amazon Best Books of the Month, August 2010: John Smith has just arrived in Paradise, Ohio, just another stop in a string of small towns where the 15-year-old has been hiding out from the Mogadorians. Those terrifying aliens are hellbent on destroying him and the other nine Loric children who have sought refuge on Earth. The Mogadorians are picking off the surviving kids in numerical order. The first three are dead and John's number is up. Will his Legacies, his defining super powers, develop in time for him to fight against the enemy? I Am Number Four is a breathless page-turner of a sci-fi novel that will have readers rooting for the teen alien who must unleash his fire power to save himself, his human friends, and the planet. This is the first of a slated multi-book series that, judging by this first book, will help reinvigorate a traditional YA genre that's grown a bit light on strong character development. So, gear-up sci-fi fans, the battle for Earth is on and there's a new kid in town!

I really enjoyed this one. It was an easy read.

The plot and set up was good but it dragged a little in the middle. Most of the characters were average, I liked Sam (the dog is pretty awesome too) and the relationships were realistic. The writing was good, not the greatest though.  The author did a good job with the backstory of the main characters home planet.  The story of the war and everything was the best part and kept me reading, it was a plot driven novel.

Vampire Books - House Of Night -

Enter the dark, magical world of The House of Night, a world very much like our own, except here vampyres have always existed. Sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird has just been Marked as a fledgling vampyre and joins the House of Night, a school where she will train to become an adult vampire. That is, if she makes it through the Change--and not all of those who are Marked do. It sucks to begin a new life, especially away from her friends, and on top of that, Zoey is no average fledgling. She has been chosen as special by the vampyre Goddess Nyx. Zoey discovers she has amazing powers, but along with her powers come bloodlust and an unfortunate ability to Imprint her human ex-boyfriend. To add to her stress, she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers: When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite group, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny--with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

This series is very addicting. The writing is okay, but it still keeps you reading. I liked most of the characters except for Zoey, the main character. She was all right at first but gets to be annoying later is the series. The story is really good but the characters and writing bring it down.

Synopsis

St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger. . . . Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.

-Barnes and noble

This book series is one of the best YA vampire book series I have read. The plot flows and the action keeps the reader hooked. There is also romance that adds to the story but doesn't take over. The relationship between Rose and Dimitri is believable and grows through out the books. Rose is a strong lead character and is well rounded.

Debut Author spotlight

No one knew of its existence until it was removed from the attic upstairs.

In a beautiful house that overlooks the sea, an antique clock has the power to change the course of their lives.

The power the clock resonates will not only force Destiny and ex-boyfriend David on a journey into the depths of one man's mind long dead, but into the mind of a man filled with hatred and bent on revenge.

With the only clues to the nature of the clock having disappeared into the sea, Destiny and David must retrace the steps the man had taken into the darkness, before they fall prey to the trap he had set in motion over half a century ago.

Hatred never dies.
